The Start of Something new!

A new release this month!
The first in The Shaws is coming out. It features characters who were in The Emperors of London, namely the wild and scandalous Shaw family!
I learned a lot when I was writing this book. Most of my research into the legal system of the eighteenth century had concentrated on the law itself, especially the doings of the magistrate’s court, the one at Bow Street in particular. So many features of what we consider the law today came from there, including the idea that the people who administered the law should be above corruption. Even the beginning of the police force started there.
For this book, I wanted to know more about the way the law worked in practice. I already knew about some of the quirks – the magistrate, or judge had much more leeway in his interpretation of the law, for instance. And advocacy. This book features a lawyer who is also a barrister. Used to the system of today, I was surprised to discover that one man could be both. But all the money was in being a lawyer. Barristers were relatively new, and it wasn’t usual to have someone to speak for you in court. Andrew Graham, who features in this book, is one of the forward-thinkers. He is passionate about justice, and he wants to see trials becoming much fairer. There were such men at this time, and they helped to get the notorious Waltham Black Acts repealed, but that didn’t happen until later in the century.
As I read my way through the Old Bailey site online, I discovered that at this period, barrister are hardly ever mentioned in criminal cases. The accused would speak for himself, however qualified or not they were to do so. Trials were lightning fast compared to today. You could be tried, condemned and hanged in a week. Or transported, if you were strong and the judge felt you could be of use elsewhere.
I continue to read about the law, because I might have an idea for a new series coming in here.
All most people know about the period is that a person could be hanged or transported for stealing a loaf of bread. It’s almost a cliché, but it’s also true. It depended on the value the court put on the loaf. If they decided the loaf was worth under a set amount, the sentence was far more lenient. And it was the court that set the price, not the shopkeeper or the market price.
And the other thing – the court at Bow Street was in the open air! It was roofed over sometime in the 1750s, so I had “my” court with a roof. While it might have been authentic, I don’t know how many readers would have believed it!

But when he discovers sweet Charlotte is planning to marry a dastardly man, he feels duty bound to keep her safe, even if that means making good on his marriage pledge. wow, it's July already!

Newsletter, July 2017

News

Lots of news this month! First, a special offer, courtesy of my lovely publishers, Kensington.
To celebrate the release of Fearless, the first in a brand new trilogy from Kensington, coming in August, featuring the Shaw family, the whole of The Emperors of London series is on special offer for the whole of July! Every title is discounted, some to $1.99, others to 99 cents.

Some titles, including the latest, Wild Lavender, are 99 cents each!
You can find all the details and buy links here:
http://lynneconnolly.com/the-emperors-of-london/

And I promised to tell you about my recent signing at RT Booklovers’ in Atlanta, Georgia!
My books didn’t arrive, but I had lots of other things to give away. I met so many people who love my stories, and I was able to tell them about what’s coming up and what my plans are. This has been a rather traumatic time, what with publishers closing down and new publishers being found, but I did manage, and it was so good to meet the readers.
And I met up with Liz Pelletier, head of my new publisher, Entangled!

So here’s my second piece of news.
I have signed the Even Gods Fall In Love series to Entangled. I really want to continue this series, so I didn’t want to self-publish. I want to concentrate on getting the writing bit right! All the books will be released at the end of September, which isn’t too long to wait. For those of you (and there have been gratifyingly many) who wanted to see this series back, it is coming. I’m avidly awaiting the new cover art, and as soon as I have it, I’ll have the pages put back on the website.

My website has had a revamp. Now each series has its own page, with links where you can read extracts and buy the books. And don’t forget to check the Goodies page, for surprises and new stuff! I do have a bit more about each series, with snippets and backdoor information. For instance, do you know that most of the series have ‘easter eggs,’ little links and reminders to other series. Not “sequel bait,” or a hook to buy another book, and if you don’t get them, they won’t spoil your enjoyment of the book, but for people who have read all my books, there’s a little nudge.
Have you spotted any?

Since I don’t have a new release planned for July, although there might be one coming up (don’t worry, I’ll tell you if it happens!) I thought I’d ask you, dear reader. If there’s a book you’d like a reminder of, or an extract from, I’d love to hear from you.

News for June, 2017

News for June, 2017

Here’s an overview of what I’ve been doing:
At the end of March, I went with my husband to Dublin for a short break. Afterwards, he went home, and I flew on to the USA, Los Angeles to be precise. I had a wonderful time there, and then we drove to San Diego, and I went to the zoo. After that, we flew to Boston, where Megan Bamford and I stayed with the wonderful Dalton Diaz, and Samantha Cayto came over to see us. Then we drove to New York, met with the RT people, went to a Broadway play, and then flew to Atlanta. That was where the RT Convention was this year. After that, I flew back to LA for a few days, and then came home.
Phew!
So I’m not going to get all that in one newsletter, much less talk to you about writing and my books. Of course it all feeds in, since I use my experiences in the US to help me write the books, especially the contemporaries. Bit by bit, or I’ll exhaust you with traveller’s tales!
Maybe I should start at the beginning, with Dublin!
I’ve never been there before. Can I say it was wonderful? Mostly, anyway, but when we went Dublin was one big building site. They’re extending the tram network, which entails digging up all the roads. So there was that. If you’re visiting Dublin, don’t plan to drive!

The city is full of wonderful buildings, mostly from the eighteenth century, gracious and beautiful. We went to the museum and saw the bog people. Astonishing to see the level of preservation of those bodies, and not a little creepy, too. But I loved the treasures that have been unearthed, the huge torcs and the jewellery belonging to the proud warrior nation.
My favourite place was, not surprisingly, Trinity College Library. Ranks and ranks of books. My husband wanted to take a picture of me reading, but I only had my tablet with me. Still, it makes an interesting comment on the way people read, and for me at least, it’s the message and not the medium that matters. The story is the most important thing, how you read it comes a distant second.
Trinity Library, Dublin
We visited pubs. Oh my, did we visit pubs! My favourite was The Brazen Head, close to the river. It was first built in 1195, but it’s holding its age well. It was packed, always, but you never had to wait for a drink, and the Guinness was wonderful. We did go to the Guinness Storehouse, that was fun, and the price of admission includes a free pint of Guinness.
Of course Dublin is touristy, but if you accept it and go with the flow, it’s a wonderful place to visit.
Then came America!

Book News

I have a new publisher! Entangled offered me a contract for the six books in the Even Gods Fall In Love series. I so loved writing these, and with a new publisher, I could continue to write more in the series. The first phase finished with Her Quicksilver Lover, but I would dearly like to write the next story, starting a new cycle! I had planned to self-publish them, as I have with the Secrets trilogy and The Triple Countess. I also plan to reissue Richard and Rose myself, and I have a wonderful artist working on an image for the covers.
Self-publishing isn’t my thing, I much prefer to write, but since those books went off the market when Samhain closed, I’ve had a lot of letters asking me to republish. It’s been, if not total pleasure, certainly an interesting experience!
And in case you’re wondering, I did all the covers myself.
I’m still writing contemporaries and paranormals as L.M. Connolly, and I’d love to find a home for a brand new series about an antique house and the shape-shifting secret agents who work there! Having spent some time away from the first book in the series, I can see the problems a lot clearer. I plan to rewrite it completely, and change some aspects of the plot.
And Fearless, the first book in The Shaws trilogy is out soon! More about that later, but if any of you are reviewers I have ARCs for you!

News for April 2017

April already! It seems like every month I say that. Well, this is the month of my Great American Adventure!
I love my trips to the USA, and this year is no different. But between last year and now, the country has gone through some seismic changes. Will it feel or look any different? I’m guessing no, but we’ll see.
I’m starting in Los Angeles, and then flying all the way up to Boston, then New York, then Atlanta for the RT Booklovers’ Convention. Then back to LA, and home. Wow.
But first, I’m taking a few days in Dublin with my husband. It’s a lovely city, and a beautiful country. Obviously from my name (I write under my real name) I have connections, but this is the first time I’ve visited Dublin.
I’m going to try to put photos and things on Facebook, but I’m not handy with transferring photos to social media. I use an old-fashioned camera which doesn’t have an internet connection, so I have to download the pics and upload them. But I do want to share this trip with you!
I’ve spent the month planning, packing, and coping with a mysterious infection that laid me low for a while, but I’m still here and raring to go. I’ve managed to get some writing done, including a contemporary, but I don’t know if they’ll see the light of day soon.
And the sad business continues, of clearing up after the demise of Samhain. I still have a series from Ellora’s Cave to re-edit and get back up. I’m so sorry, folks, but I promise Nightstar will be back soon!
I managed to get the Secrets series and The Triple Countess series back up. They’re selling like woah and damn, so perhaps it wasn’t just me who loved the books! They’re historicals which I always loved to revisit.

The Secrets trilogyeach features a heroine with a secret. Isabel’s is probably the most shocking, but Penelope and Arabella have their own problems, which lead them to their heart’s desires and the loves of their lives—if they have the courage to step forward and take it.

The Triple Countess series was loosely based on the real life Double Duchess. A woman who married three times, in three very different circumstances, and produced offspring who have to work with the problems of their pasts as well as the challenges of the future.
Because I’ve self-published them, I’ve been able to lower the price of each book. Maybe in the future, I’ll be able to offer omnibuses (omnibi?) But it’s my pleasure to offer them to you again.

If you go to my website, I’ve put up excerpts for you. And I'm showing off the new covers here. What do you think?

News for March 2017

News

It's been a very interesting month. Some good, some bad, but that's writing for you!
First, the good news. Veiled in Blue reached number one in the historical romance best seller list at Amazon! Yes, of course I'm thrilled to bits. And of course I took umpteen screen shots. I absolutely
loved writing this whole series, but Veiled In Blue was Julius's book, and it will always have a special place in my heart. Julius is a man who had to develop a hard skin to cope with his manipulative mother and his careless father. He deserved some happiness of his own, especially after his disastrous first marriage. So I had the pleasure of giving him the happy ending he deserved!
As always, there's more to write about the bad news than the good, though Heaven knows why that is. Sadly, at the end of February, Samhain Publishing closed its doors. I've been there since the beginning, when they published first the Triple Countess series, then the Richard and Rose series. They were a great publisher, and they produced some brilliant covers for my books. I met some wonderful people there. My heart goes out to everybody who is affected by this closure, but I have to say that Crissy Brashear did it right. She is getting the books pulled from the sites as quickly as possible, so she can send out the reversions that we need in order to republish.
But, sadly, Samhain Publishing is no more. I'm exploring possibilities, but I do want to get the books back up as fast as possible. The Even Gods Fall In Love series is one that could continue, for instance. Other publishers have kindly come forward, but I'm still thinking about what I want to do with those books. I really don't know. I do want to make them available, but the time and expense involved is rather daunting, especially when I have another series from the equally defunct Ellora's Cave to get out there.
But, onwards and upwards, as they say!
I'm making plans for my annual visit to the US, but with a side visit to Dublin. It's a wonderful city, and my husband and myself are taking a few days to ourselves before I fly over the ocean. I'm looking forward no end to the visit.

New Release! Maybe Tomorrow, a timeslip romance

This month, Maybe Tomorrow releases. This is a month for firsts, and this one is part of the Enchanted Keepsakes series. The same character pops up in every book, guiding the time-crossed lovers to their happy ending!
So here’s more about the book, and the lovely cover I’ve been gifted with!

Two hearts beat as one - two hundred years apart!

Tabitha Simpson is on her honeymoon alone, after her fiancé cheated on her. In London she finds a tiny shop, where she buys a miniature portrait. The man in the picture calls to her, as if she already knows him. When she finds the full-size painting, magic happens, and she is transported back in time to 1816.

Avery is the Earl of Northcote, expected to marry and provide an heir. But when he finds Tabby on the sofa of his Thames villa, he is smitten. He doesn’t want anybody else. He will defy everybody and everything to have her.
But some things can’t be defied.

Tabby and Avery are madly in love, but they can’t stay together. Their lives are two hundred years apart.
When Tabby goes home, she knows she can’t return. Avery must spend the rest of his life without her, or find a way to join the woman he loves.

Maybe Tomorrow is part of the Enchanted Keepsakes series.
“True love has no boundaries. It knows no space or time. Human or immortal, true love will always find you.”
Legend spins a tale of Korinna, a beautiful witch. With loving parents who doted on her, she wanted for nothing. On her fifth birthday, tragedy struck when her mother became ill and was suddenly taken from her. For two years, it was only Korinna and her father, until one day he fell in love. Her father married, and their family grew. Korinna’s copper curls and wide violet eyes were a contrast to her four siblings’ raven locks and emerald gazes. The men showered her with attention while ignoring her sisters, stealing their chances for love and marriage. On her eighteenth birthday, her resentful stepmother placed a curse upon her.
Korinna would forever walk the earth, never finding her own true love.
Her desire to help others sent her time traveling through exotic lands, collecting keepsakes along the way. With her treasures in hand, she placed an enchantment upon each of them. It is said whoever possesses one of these trinkets will be blessed with true love.
So remember, the next time you step into a small shop, take a close look around. Do you sense the magic? If you happen to spot a beautiful redhead with sparkling violet eyes, it just might be Korinna, setting up shop in your town. Take care, for the treasure that whispers to you—to lift it from its resting place and take it home—could lead you straight to your one true love.

And it’s on my website here: http://lynneconnolly.com/maybe-tomorrow/

Samhain Closing

So Samhain is closing. That makes me sad. The contrast between Samhain and Ellora’s Cave, who used to be my two main publishers, is startling. Ellora’s Cave’s disdain for the people who made them money, ie the authors, became startlingly apparent at the end. The constant rejection of legitimate requests for returns of rights, the refusal to keep authors in the loop fostered despair and exasperation, as it was obvious they were playing games. The owners blamed everybody except themselves for the eventual failure.
On the other hand, Samhain trusted its authors and never disparaged them. They have paid me every month, and that is my base requirement for a publisher. That they live up to their side of the contract, while I live up to mine. They were always courteous and considerate. I sent them work I was really proud of.
I was with Samhain since the beginning. They published Richard and Rose, my first big success, and went on to publish others. I’m genuinely sad to see them go. Even when they were struggling I had no intention of pulling the bulk of my books. I was considering pulling a short series, but that was all.
With a simple announcement, a lot of my books will be pulled off the market. I want to assure you that they will all be reissued. They’ll have new covers, but I don’t plan to do any serious alterations to them, so they’ll be the same books. I’ve listed them at the end of this post. I’ll probably turn them around myself. I don’t plan anything but a simple announcement, because I want them to be available as soon as I can make it so. I’ll probably release them once a week until they’re all back out there, unless I can manage to get them ready at the same time.
When Samhain closes its doors, I’ll make the books dark on my website, but never fear, they will be back soon!
It’s all a bit of a blow, but I’m still there, and I can’t see myself stopping any time soon.
Here are the books that are involved.
The Richard and Rose series: Yorkshire, Devonshire, Venice, Harley Street, Eyton, Hareton Hall, Maiden Lane and Lisbon.
The Triple Countess series: Last Chance My Love, A Chance to Dream, Met By Chance and A Betting Chance.
The Secrets series: Seductive Secrets, Alluring Secrets and Tantalizing Secrets.
Even Gods Fall In Love: Lightning Unbound, Arrows of Desire, Forged By Love, War Chest and Her Quicksilver Lover
And the standalone novella, It Started At Waterloo.

That’s a lot of books!

News for February

Those of you on Facebook might have noticed that I’ve been engaged in political debate more than somewhat. I do want to assure my readers that my Facebook author page, my website and blog will continue to be politics-free. Although my views might bleed through to my books, having been subjected to politics thinly disguised as fiction at school, I will never, ever, write politics disguised as fiction! I hate books that preach, and I avoid them, so I won’t subject my readers to the same thing. While I do think that every concerned citizen should engage, I also think there’s a time and a place for engagement, and romantic fiction isn’t it. I write stories about people, and how they cope with the world around them, whether that be an imaginary world, a historical world, or the contemporary world. Since I write romance, it gets even more personal. So - no politics here, or on my Facebook author page, or in my blog. Promise.
Under my other name, I’m writing a book about the President of the USA. I’ve been building the series to this point, so I can hardly back off, but I never, ever imagined this storm going off when the book was due. My President doesn’t hold any similarities with the real life incumbent, though. He’s a shape-shifter, and he’s in a poly relationship. And he’s gorgeous (of course he is!) So all that Facebook stuff was partly research. I waded into the truly weird at times, but the research into the way people think was invaluable. I don’t like to write one-note villains, I want them to have a point of view that, however twisted, works for them, so I’ve been to places that, frankly, scared me to death. But I did it in the name of research, and research is king. I also did some great research into practicalities like the layout of the White House. I found an old video of Jackie Kennedy showing people around the place, which was lovely and picked up lots of information about the way communication works, even semi-secret tunnels generally referred to as underground walkways, so the people using them don’t have to leave the premises. But I’ll take it. There’s nothing like a secret tunnel to get the imagination going!
This month I’ve been busy writing a contracted book that won’t see the light of day for a while. It’s an mm - my very first. I’ve written mfm and mmf menages before (I know, the acronyms can make my head spin). Mfm is where both men play with the woman, and mmf is where everybody plays with everybody else. But a relationship without a woman, a gay romance, is an entirely different thing. The connection is different, even the way they communicate. Research is limited to the personal aspect, so I just went with two people in love, and stopped stressing about gender. This is a novella, under 50000 words, so there’s only one sex scene. It didn’t feel right to fling these two into bed together. Since it’s a historical, I had to cope with the, to us, horrible notion that gay men could be hanged, and engaging in a gay physical relationship was truly dangerous. I had to face some unpleasant truths, but the book is done now, and my agonising worked out well, I think. I’ll let you be the judges when it comes out.
Next is the President book. After that, I have one more contracted book, and there are a few proposals and self published projects in the air.
But I also have other books coming out soon, which I’ve detailed below. I’m thrilled to bring a new audience to the Counterfeit Countess, as it has been in the Amazon top selling historicals this month in the new anthology Love Across Time. You can still get the single title, but why do that, when for now it can be bought in an anthology with a number of other great titles?
I’m going to start outlining a new project soon. I’ve had an idea for a new historical series that I’m itching to write. The central character is closely based on a real person, a woman who never married because she was too wealthy. Each book will feature one of her protegees, and as well as a romance, there’ll be a strong mystery element. Historical detectives? I originally planned Richard and Rose to be like that, but their personal lives overwhelmed the series and became too tempting to resist. I know where I’d love the series to go, but I’ll have to wait and see, get it planned out, outlined and the first bit written.

Newsletter, January 2014

Happy New Year!

Do you have any plans? Or is it too early?
I’ve booked to go to the USA in April for RT Booklevers’ Convention. I go every year, and I always meet fascinating people and have a great time. This year it’s being held in Atlanta. I’ve passed through Atlanta a number of times, but never stayed there. I start my visit with a trip to Los Angeles, so I’ll keep you informed, in case you want to meet up or come and see me at a booksigning!
Last year was an odd one, wasn’t it? While some wonderful things did happen, it seemed that the book industry took a one-eighty. Self-publishing established itself as a viable alternative, but lost its wild edge, so it’s not “the only way.” I do both, and I will continue to do so, as long as I can. So far, this is the best job I’ve ever had, but not the best paying one! But I didn’t start it because I wanted to make a fortune. Not that I’d turn it down if I got it, but I’m not holding my breath.
I have two books left on my latest Kensington contract, and there’s one Emperors of London book left to come out. The Emperors will return, but in different guises, in different series. I do try to ensure that a reader can pick up any of the books I’ve written and not be lost, although that can be a tough call sometimes. I will promise you that I will carry on writing about the eighteenth century. I’m deeply in love with that era and the people who lived there. I won’t abandon them. But I do have a new idea I’m working on, something that harks back to the very first books I had published.
As for my contemporary stories - after the success of my Omega Team book for Kindle Worlds, I have a new series to write, if I can find the time. I absolutely love the idea, but I need to find someone who is equally in love with the concept. I’m afraid self-publishing isn’t for me, apart from the occasional venture and for republishing my backlist. I don’t have the time, skills or budget to make it my primary mode of publishing. I’m too in love with writing, and continuing to make my stories the best they can possibly be.
The publishing world is changing, that’s for sure. So is the rest of the world. We’ll have to wait and see how it all goes! However, writing has always been my mode of defence, my shield. All my life. So here’s to another year of the extraordinary. And I’d love you to come with me.

New Release
Not precisely a new release, but I’m thrilled to tell you that Counterfeit Countess will be part of a new anthology, the Love Across Time set. That means you can get it, together with some other awesome books from writers who are totally talented, for a lower price. And the cover is gorgeous, just as a bonus!
It’s up for preorder on the 2nd January, 2017, so we’re starting the year with a bang.
Tell me you can’t resist these beauties!

Amsterdam!
I took my autumn break with my daughter this month, and we went to Amsterdam! We stayed at the Grand Amrath Hotel, which was an incredible place. It used to house six shipping companies, but now it's a hotel. Check the picture. It's of a stained glass window in the Amrath. I have never stayed at a hotel with gargoyles before!
We went primarily to see the Rijksmuseum, now it's reopened after a four year revamp. We loved it so much we went twice. Its collection of Dutch art is amazing, so very good. It is lacking in other areas, such as the Italian Renaissance but the Dutch paintings more than made up for that. All I can say is that you get only a fraction of the impact of a great painting by viewing it online. You need to go and see it. The Night Watch is so much more, well, more, when you confront it face-to-face. So get out to your local museums and art galleries, give them your patronage.
Getting away like that refreshes and renews. I don't know about you, but I need to do that, go away from everything I know and love for a few days. When I got back, the creative juices were working overtime!
Writing news
I sent in the first of the Shaws books before I went away. I am so happy with this series, and I got the beginnings of another series in my head, which I'm working on now. I can't say that an Emperor of London might not stray over there. I'm a bit of a Jo Beverley in the way I write, with series overlapping and familiar characters coming in. I've noticed that Joss Whedon does that, too.
I am so pleased with the way Veiled In Blue is being received. That was such a delightful book to write, that I'm really happy people are enjoying it. Brace yourselves for Helena's book, coming early next year!
I've had a new release this month, but I'll tell you all about it below.

Crazy In Love
So, my lovely friend Desiree Holt asked me if I wanted to write a story for her Omega Team Kindle World series. Did I!
It was great to get back to contemporary romance, especially for a series that is as successful as this one. The book got into the top ten Kindle World chart the day after release, which I'm very proud of!
I had a story idea ready. An ex-soldier, a woman who has been through trauma is sent to a New York psychiatrist to assess her suitability for a job with the Omega Team. She doesn't realize the psychiatrist is also an ex-soldier, a member of a highly secret team sent in to perilous situations. She doesn't realize that he's her doctor when she sleeps with him.
So there they are, in his office, sorting out the mess when the office is attacked by a group of terrorists. What's a girl to do except tool up and get working?
Here's the official blurb:
The city can be every bit as dangerous as the battlefield - especially when it comes to love.
In New York for her final assessment before she joins the Omega Team, Joy meets Rick, and indulges in the luxury of a night of sin. It’s everything she wants, and more.
Rick Kendall can’t forget his night with Joy. Not until he meets his newest client - Jozefina Ziolkowski, Joy to her friends. He can’t take her as a patient, and sending her back to Tampa means he won’t see her again. That’s unacceptable to him.
The unexpected arrives, and they find themselves the center of an armed attack. Joy discovers Rick is a whole lot more than a city shrink. Special forces medic turned psychiatrist, Rick will need every one of his skills to help the woman he is growing to love. What does Joy have that these creeps want? Finding out means they’re in a ton of trouble. Not finding out means Joy is dead.
Something’s gotta give.

September News!

Newsletter, September, 2016

Goodness me, it’s September!
Outside it’s raining and I’m wearing a long-sleeved top. Tonight the new series of Strictly Come Dancing starts (don’t judge me!) so I know it’s autumn. I’ve still have obligations to fulfill from my trip to America in April – a couple of novellas, which I’m looking forward to writing.
I sit here with my computer which is now a year old, and try not to panic. At least I don’t have school age children any more. If I did, they’d be back at school already.
I went back to my home town of Leicester recently, to visit my mother and my sister, who had a health problem. But I did get a chance to nip into the cathedral and see the tomb of Richard III. They did a beautiful job. Richard has his own chapel, and the tomb has a deep cross carved into it, with his name around the plinth in gold. Very simple. I’m a bit of a Ricardian, tempered with commonsense. I don’t think he killed the princes, I think that opportunist Buckingham did it in order to foment (fabulous word!) rebellion. But I don’t think Richard was incapable of the deed. His yearning for order, everything in its place, speaks to us, though dimly, because of the destruction of the evidence that came later. However Richard did start the reform of the law that his successor continued. Buckingham’s rebellion failed, but two years later, the future Henry VII succeeded. Someone said that if it wasn’t for Shakespeare, Richard would probably be viewed as a minor king, one people barely remembered. So is it better to be remembered as a villain, or not at all?
I remember Leicester as a gray place, one with a lot of industry but not much leisure. That’s changed completely. It’s now a wonderfully multicultural city, full of colour and sound. I’d go back to live there in a heartbeat, if I could. But my heart was never there. That belongs to Manchester. I stepped off the train for an interview at the Polytechnic, and fell in love with the place. I stayed there, did my degree, and then crossed the road to Manchester University to do another one, and just stayed.
Once, most people rarely left the vicinity of their homes. They would live and die in the space of around 20 square miles, or even less, and never see anywhere else. We forget how small the world has become.
My, aren’t I philosophical? That probably comes from writing historicals. When I research, it’s like visiting another country, another place that is familiar but not. The time it took to go any distance, the lack of instant communication are things that are easily forgotten, as is the size of the social groups most people moved in. Very small. I’ve written the first book in a new trilogy for Kensington, about the Shaw family, and I had to recall how long journeys took and what a huge undertaking they were.
In “Dilemma in Yellow Silk” (which hit number 12 in Amazon this month, yay!) the hero and heroine travel from Yorkshire to London, getting away from their pursuers, who want to kill her. That part took a lot of the book, which only seemed fair because the journey would have taken so long! The following book, “Reckless In Pink” is, by contrast, set mostly in London, and has Claudia Shaw, the well born heroine, inheriting a house that turns out to be a brothel! Claudia wants to see it before her family makes her sell it and add the sum to her dowry, and that’s where her adventure starts. Doing the research for that one reminded me how close the classes of society lived. In retracing Claudia’s steps on a visit to London this year, it is fascinating to see the houses she would have seen still standing, and mark the differences between the houses in the West End, and the crammed-together, ramshackle ones crowding around Covent Garden.
I did pick a house for Claudia to inherit. That’s the beauty of personal research. That and the shopping, because most of the houses around the Garden are lovely little boutiques, and I had to see the inside of them, didn’t I?
“Reckless In Pink” is 99 cents this month, as we’re building up to the release of the next Emperor book, which features Julius and the woman he falls head over heels for!
So pick up “Reckless In Pink,” and if you like it, preorder “Veiled In Blue” to continue the story!
Oh yes, and we had a cover reveal for the last in the series, “Wild Lavender,” which I’ve put above this post. What do you think? Me, I'm in love with the image!

Newsletter, August 2016

After a great spring and summer, I’m settling down to some solid writing time. No more visits for a while. I was very tempted to attend two writing summer schools this year, but I really don’t have the time. I have to get cracking on some new books. And, as usual, avoiding the promo I seem to be so bad at. I do have plans, this list included, to move the email list to another server. Yahoo is getting very iffy for reliability these days. I remember the good old days of yahoo groups, and in many ways my system is set up to serve that. I can wish for a great admin assistant for Christmas! You never know, maybe I’ll get one. I love writing, but the “buy my book” promotions have me scratching my head. I know I hate too many cold phone calls and promos dropping in my inbox, so I feel embarrassed adding to them. But I’m probably not serving my books properly by not doing more. It’s a constant dilemma, and not one I’m anywhere near solving.
I do a great ostrich.
But I have had a lot of incentive to work. With all the political stuff raging over the media, I can take note and get back to writing. Not that the Georgian era was any less turbulent, but at least that’s over and done. Except in my books. I can make anything happen.
I always stick to the facts, and then vary from there. In history there are very few hard lines, when you take a closer look. True, the Battle of Waterloo happened on a mud-clogged Belgian plain in June, 1815, but when you take a wider view, it gets fuzzy. Similarly, when I look at Culloden, and the aftermath, there were few hard lines. Would what happened to the Scots have happened anyway? What if the Young Pretender had won and marched to London in triumph?
Very little, probably. After the headlines, he would have had to accept the British constitution as it was, and the politicians he had inherited. He might have introduced a few new ones, but they were too influential and too well entrenched for him to ignore. The days of absolute monarchy had long gone, and the laws had changed. One man couldn’t have changed them back.
There is evidence that the Young Pretender wasn’t the brightest of sparks. If he had married and begat children he would have prolonged the Cause more effectively, providing a line of succession to rival the Hanovers, but he didn’t. In fact, he consistently refused to marry. Perhaps his parents’ marriage was a reminder to him. In history, the Old Pretender’s wife left him soon after the birth of their son Henry. Then she went into a nunnery, in the same city, but she rarely saw her husband after that. That was the gap that I used to create the Emperors of London series.
That’s what I look for – believable gaps in real life stories, or characters that just beg to be put in a book. I’m currently channeling the Duke of Somerset, known as the Proud Duke for the book I’m currently writing, which you won’t see for a while yet.

In contemporary paranormal news, I’m trying to get the re-release of the STORM series off the ground. Two books are out so far, with four to come over the coming weeks. This was another what if – what if humans discovered they’d been sharing the world with vampires, sorcerers and shape-shifters all along? I bunched them together into a group known as Talents. Basically it’s the same world as Department 57, but with the Talents living openly. The books happen when the revelation is first disclosed and everybody is trying to get used to the change. I fell in love with every single one of these heroes. And now they have new covers and a bit of editing (lower on the sex, higher on the action) I’m even more proud of them.

Over here, we had our week of summer. Now it’s raining outside, which is how I like it. I hate too hot or too cold. A few years ago we had a holiday in Rome in August. Over 100 degrees had me fainting, and it was so frustrating because I wanted to see a lot more than I did!

Book News

Red Alert

I’ve signed a new three book contract with Kensington Lyrical, yay! It’s a spinoff from the Emperors series, but will be completely new. It is to concern three members of the Shaw family, the children of the Marquess of Strenshall. One of them will be a novella concerning the gay son of the family, Darius. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to tell his story, particularly since so many of you have written to ask me about him!
There are still two Emperors stories left to be released, so it will be a little time before you get to see them, but they are coming!

The Even Gods series from Samhain is now complete, but I’m working on a new series, historical, for a different publisher. More news soon!

Aaand, the STORM series is coming out again. I’ve had the books re-edited, but it’s a very light one, to remove some of the highly erotic stuff and make them more mainstream, the way I originally envisioned them. They have spiffy new covers, and they are coming out under the L.M. Connolly name. I still love these books and I would love them to find a new lease of life! If they do well, it means I can write some more.

Publishing is in a constant state of change. A few years ago, I was happily settled with three publishers, being paid for my work and planning more stories.

Then came self-publishing. In 2010, that market really took off. I wasn’t too keen, because I’m a writer, not a business person and anything that takes me away from writing isn’t welcome.

But I had to pay attention, because sales were going down.

I tried, but I’m not as clever as some people out there, and I never got that stroke of luck that really matters either. So my self-publishing career is fairly average. I’m doing all right, don’t get me wrong.

But I haven't set the world on fire. Yet. Very few writers do.

The world changes, and a professional writer has to make some adjustments, which I’m doing right now.

I’ve spent this month writing like crazy. I had several requests for a historical novel I was writing, when I attended RT in April. So I had to finish it and polish it!

Writing the first in a new series (and you know me, I tend to write in series) is exciting and difficult. I’m learning a whole new set of characters and situations, finding out what makes them tick and how they are led into something exciting enough to engage a reader.

I tend to make characters as close to real as I can. That means they don’t always behave the way they should, they aren’t always trammeled by the needs of the genre I write. Sometimes I’ll write a plot, and when I get there in the book, I’ll discover that the character is too smart for that, or that the stakes have changed. I love it. Then I have to stop and reconstruct the whole thing.

Anyway, changes. I’m looking to move my newsletter from Yahoo to somewhere else. As far as you’re concerned, that will mean you’ll get an extra, short email to make sure it’s working. If you don’t want to continue, please let me know and I’ll deal with it. Yahoo is becoming more unreliable and it’s time I looked somewhere else for a newsletter program.

So this month I’m at the RNA Conference at Lancaster Universtiy. We’ve had some fascinating speakers, including an ex police detective speaking on murder cases. It’s been fascinating and as always it’s so enjoyable catching up with old friends and finding out what everybody is up to.

New Releases

Yes, releases! The covers are below, and then I’ve put the links to my webpage, where you can find all the buy links to the books!

The day a dragon flies over Central Park, the world changes. People know what they’ve suspected for centuries––Talents exist, and they’ve been living among us all the time.

Dragons, vampires, shape-shifters, sorcerers with incredible psi gifts form a special agency to protect the rights and interests of Talents.

New enemies arise, and they are forced to struggle to meet the new challenges and protect the people they love.

The books are coming out at weekly intervals, starting on the 27th July, and they're up for preorder now.

Red Alert Excerpt:

A scuffle outside the door made Dr. Jones turn his head toward the sound. Megan took the opportunity and lashed out with her foot. It struck with a satisfyingly solid whump, right in his solar plexus.
Dr. Jones doubled up, gasping for air. Well, the first step to getting out had been easy. But facing the “student” standing between her and the door, Megan knew he wouldn’t be such a pushover. He stood, feet planted wide apart, knees slightly bent in a position she recognized from her weekly karate class.
Fuck.
She had to hurry, before Jones regained his breath. When she kicked up toward the guy’s balls, intending the kick to be a feint for an upward hand jab, the bastard grabbed her ankle and threw her to the hard floor. The very hard floor. Her head hit the ground with a solidity Megan felt in every bone of her body, intensifying her ever-present headache, and she kicked back with her free foot, only to find it caught in the same meaty fist.
Pressure on the side of her pants alerted her to the syringe pressing into her flesh.
The door burst open, propelled by the heavy body of the red-haired “student”. He fell next to her, already unconscious, his big body completely relaxed. One massive arm dropped over her body, dislodging the needle’s trajectory.
A whirlwind followed the student, or what seemed like one to Megan. Dark, unruly hair was the only feature she was absolutely sure of topping a tall, powerful body with excellent reactions, because the intruder spun around on his heel, his arm already whipping out to take her attacker full across his face.
The open-handed slap knocked the African-American aside but he came back, one blow too superficial to cause any real damage. Just in time to receive the jackhammer punch under his chin that knocked his head back with a crunch that sounded fatal.
The student fell back against the room’s only chair, collapsing it with the sound of breaking wood and the fleshier crunch of breaking bone.
It was the man she’d glimpsed earlier entering the main ward. Closer up he was even more lethally sexy. Arousal, totally unexpected, purred through her veins. “There are more outside, so the only way we’re going to get out of here is through that window.” He swept the room with an appraising glance and picked up the metal bedside table as if it weighed nothing at all, ignoring the clatter as the drawer fell out. “Close your eyes if you’re scared of heights and hold on tight.”
Lifting the table over his head, he swung it at the window. The sound of shattering glass rewarded him and he stepped forward to knock out the remaining jagged shards and drag the wrecked blind aside.
Was that a hand or a claw? A claw, she realized, as fingernails lengthened into talons and blue-green scales clustered over his hand and arm.
She gasped in shock. “Holy fuck!”
He turned to face her, scales gathering on his neck, his voice throaty and raw. “Climb up and hold on. Or stay here and face them.”
Feet pounded up the hallway outside and at the same time, her rescuer completed his transformation into a man-sized dragon. Clothes ripped and tore, falling from his body, and she felt a sense of irritation in her mind that came from him. Irritation?
Yeah, I liked that jacket. Grab the pieces and let’s go. Pick up your stuff too. Then put your arms around my neck. Or stay here and let them kill you.
His neck was much longer and greener than it had been a minute ago. When she heard the shout “In here!” from outside the room she knew this was decision time.
She grabbed her purse, pausing to sling it over her head so the strap crossed her body, and picked up the remains of the leather jacket, only remembering the folder containing her scan results at the last minute, then she obeyed him—it—and put her arms around his—its—neck.
When we’re through the window, I’m going full size. Be prepared to hang on ‘cuz we ain’t coming down for a while.
I must be mad.
If you are, I am too. Ready?
As I’ll ever be.
Her feet lifted off the ground just as she was beginning to wonder how the hell she could talk to somebody mind to mind. She closed her eyes and hung on.
